  *   Associate Professor (September 2009-) of world politics and Executive Director of Centre for Global Governance and Policy at the O.P.Jindal Global University in Sonipat,

             India. 

 

2. PAST EMPLOYMENT   

 

*     Project Assessor (June-August 2006) in Mindanao, Southern Philippines, for Nonviolent Peaceforce, an international NGO specialising in civilian peacekeeping. The assessment probed the need for deployment of international civilian peacekeepers in selected war-prone parts of Mindanao. It was based on extensive consultations with local civil society, armed actors and international organisations active in the conflict zone.

               

*      Civilian Peacekeeper (September 2003-February 2005) in Batticaloa district of eastern Sri Lanka for Nonviolent Peaceforce resided in Valachchenai, a conflict-ridden village, and worked on sensitive issues of civilian protection, human rights and expansion of political space for civil society in a war-devastated setting.  

 

*      Intern with the Department of Protection, International Rescue Committee, New York from January 2003 to April 2003. I was involved in making arrangements for protection roundtables for participants from humanitarian organisations at IRC Headquarters. I created an annotated bibliography of relevant protection articles and other resources pertaining to refugees and IDPs for distribution in field offices of IRC. I assisted drafting protection programme proposals to seek funds for projects in IRC field locations. Other tasks included improving IRC's field-based survey methodology and shaping a protocol on the sharing of sensitive information in humanitarian operations.

 

*      Intern at the the headquarters of the United National High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), Geneva, from June 2002 to September 2002. I was involved in an intensive multi-tasking three month stint with the Private Sector Public Affairs Service of UNHCR's Division of Communication and Information (DCI). I prepared thematic proposals on UNHCR material assistance programmes for dissemination to governments and private sector donors; devised more than 10 webpages for the Private Sector Fundraising unit; edited Guidelines for Private Sector Partnerships; legal summaries of 'most vulnerable persons and groups-at-risk' and UNHCR field protection strategies; donor feedback reports on UNHCR field operations and impact; research on companies willing to partner with UNHCR under the UN Global Compact; statistical summaries and analysis of MORI opinion polls about UNHCR's public visibility and name recognition; position papers on pre-emptive preparedness of UNHCR in potential conflict zones of the world etc.  

 

 *      Intern with the NGO, Central New York Inter-Religious Refugee Resettlement Programme from September 2001 to January 2002. The program aims to provide resettlement facilities in and around Syracuse city for refugees from Africa, Latin America Asia and Europe who have been granted asylum by the government of the United States of America. I worked  on a weekly basis with the Director, Hope Wallis, in two major projects, viz. Dissemination of Information-Technology skills to the ‘Lost Boys’ of Sudan and Statistical Data Surveys on Sudanese and Somali refugees for the purpose of application to a $175,000 grant from the Office of Refugee Resettlement, Washington D.C. I also engaged in research for humanitarian affairs grants relevant to refugee needs and integration into local communities in the Central New York area. 

 

 *      Contributing Editor, Kashmir News Network (KNN), a publicity organ of the Panun Kashmir movement, which voices the plight, concerns and culture of nearly 400,000 internally displaced Kashmiri Hindus in the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir from a human rights point of view. I was involved in maintenance and updating of several prominent websites of KNN, viz.http://www.ikashmir.org/, http://www.kashmirherald.com/, http://www.kashmiri-pandit.org/, http://www.panunkashmir.org/, http://www.satisar.org/, http://www.koausa.org/. I am on the editorial board of Kashmir Herald and Kashmir Sentinel, two widely read magazines among the Kashmiri Diaspora.

 

*      Columnist (February 2002-) for Asia Times, published from Hong Kong, China. My columns touch upon themes related to world politics, human rights and conflict.

 

*      Columnist (December 2008-) for The Financial Express, published from New Delhi, India. My columns focus on international political economy.  

 

*      Columnist (February 2003-January 2005) for Bharat Times, published from Victoria, Australia. My column, titled Globe Scan, covered issues of global concern and political theory.

 

*    Outreach Assistant (2001-’02), South Asia Center, under the aegis of the Global Affairs Institute, Maxwell School of Citizenship, Syracuse University. I manned the Center’s office, dealt with academic and administrative matters, established contacts with potential speakers and edited the South Asia Center Newsletter 2002. I also researched and developed a comprehensive gateway on global terrorism from a non-partisan humanist perspective.

  

3. VOLUNTEER & SOCIAL SERVICE

 

  1. Officiated as Secretary & President, Social Service League, St.Stephen’s College, Delhi (1996-‘98). Among the notable achievements during my tenure were university-wide blood donation camps; reading and teaching facilities to visually handicapped students; tuition classes to children of the college’s non-teaching staff; weekly student visit scheme for old age homes run by the Missionaries of Charity in Delhi.

 

  1. Served as Founding Member, Oxford South Asian Forum for Discussion (OXSAF, 1998-2000) in Oxford University, UK, with the aims of promoting discussion and academic roundtables on common issues concerning the entire South Asian region. Some of the topics covered included ‘Women’s Rights and Empowerment’, ‘The Malaise of Corruption’, ‘Conflict Resolution in the Context of India-Pakistan Tensions’, ‘Re-energising SAARC’ etc.

 

  1. Worked as Cabinet Minister, St.Stephen’s College Students Union (1997-‘98), an elected office that ran a student grievances cell, ordered and distributed college merchandise and stationery, ran the Union gift shop and made available manpower for events organised by the Union.

 

  1. As Secretary, Cine Club, St.Stephen’s College, Delhi (1997-’98), I conducted public film screenings of critically acclaimed national and international movies like The Apu Trilogy, A Passage to India, Battleship Potemkin, Rashomon, Schindler’s List, The 39 Steps etc. Post-screening discussion and critiquing sessions were organised. Film projectors were also acquired and the college video library collection was augmented.
